It\u2019s quite an extraordinary story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-violent-past\">A violent past<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasina\u2019s political journey is a story of Shakespearean proportions \u2013 a saga of tragedy, exile and power inextricably linked to the history of her home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eldest daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the charismatic \u201cFather of the Nation,\u201d she was thrust into politics early in life as she witnessed Bangladesh\u2019s struggle for autonomy from Pakistan. But it was a single, bloody night in August 1975 that truly forged her path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a brutal military coup, army officers assassinated her father, her mother, and three of her brothers in their Dhaka home. Ziaur Rahman \u2013 the husband of her future arch-nemesis, Khaleda Zia \u2013 rose to power, his regime passing a law that would protect Mujibur\u2019s assassins for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overnight, Hasina\u2019s life was transformed, and she was forced into six years of exile in India, which imprinted a deep respect for the Indian state on the future leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she finally returned to Bangladesh in 1981, it was to a nation clamoring for its founding ideals of secularism. But she also entered a political arena about to be defined by another woman pushed into tragedy: Zia, whose husband had himself been assassinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recalling the day of her return from forced exile, Hasina&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/albd.org\/articles\/news\/39116\/#:~:text=HPM%20Sheikh%20Hasina-,Returned%20home%20to%20bring%20smile%20on%20people's%20faces:%20HPM%20Sheikh,of%20the%20people%20of%20Bangladesh.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cWhen I landed at the airport, I didn\u2019t get anyone of my (relatives) but received love of millions of people, and that was my only strength.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus began the era of the \u201cBattling Begums\u201d \u2013 a deeply personal, yet destructive duel between two women that would grip Bangladesh for the next 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"she-had-to-flee\">\u2018She had to flee\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>[muki_ai_summary]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking the helm of her father\u2019s Awami League, Hasina embarked on a long journey through the political wilderness, navigating house arrests and crackdowns amid a growing rivalry with Zia. But when she returned to power in 2008, she was seen as a changed leader \u2013 someone more resolute, less trusting and determined to permanently secure her position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next 15 years, she ruled Bangladesh with an increasingly iron fist, ushering an era of strong economic growth. At the same time, she gave India crucial support, bolstering New Delhi through economic and security deals in a neighborhood that includes adversaries Pakistan and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Bangladesh\u2019s developmental success came at a steep price: human rights organizations warned that she and her government were headed toward a one-party system. She had proven adept at surviving storms of popular protest, arrests and assassination attempts, but the youth-led uprising that erupted last year was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What began as student demonstrations over civil service job quotas quickly swelled into a nationwide roar for her resignation. The regime\u2019s response was a brutal crackdown that, according to the UN human rights office, left as many as 1,400 people dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the bloodshed did not crush the movement \u2013 it galvanized it, turning public anger into an unstoppable force that ultimately toppled her government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe had to flee,\u201d Hasan said. \u201cThat act itself is an acknowledgement of guilt. The people, the forces, everyone turned against her because she pushed the boundaries. She killed, her order was to kill so many.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sentenced-to-death\">Sentenced to death<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasina\u2019s life as a political refugee in New Delhi brings her story full circle, returning her to the same state of exile she endured nearly half a century ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasina was tried in absentia and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal, Bangladesh\u2019s domestic war crimes court \u2013 a judicial body that she helped set up. The death sentence was met with applause and tears in the courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt pacified us a bit,\u201d Abdur Rab, the father of one victim, told Reuters. \u201cBut we will be fully content when we see the hangman\u2019s rope around her neck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India, which also has the death penalty, adopted a neutral stance, noting the verdict and vowing to \u201cengage constructively with all stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasina\u2019s family has praised New Delhi for giving her refuge. \u201cIndia has always been a good friend,\u201d Hasina\u2019s son, Sajeeb Wazed, told local news agency ANI. \u201cIn the crisis, India has essentially saved my mother\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than a decade, Hasina was one of India\u2019s most steadfast regional allies. Her government was instrumental in cracking down on anti-India insurgent groups that used Bangladeshi territory as a safe haven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aninews.in\/news\/national\/general-news\/pm-modi-lauds-shiekh-hasina-for-zero-tolerance-on-terrorism-bangladesh-reaffirms-fight-against-extremism20191005180841\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lauded<\/a>&nbsp;Hasina for keeping their countries\u2019 extensive border secure. She can appeal the verdict in Bangladesh\u2019s Supreme Court, then potentially the International Criminal Court in The Hague, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince not all the remedies are exhausted, India would not be in a rush to send her,\u201d Trigunayat said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The day Hasina was sentenced, Bangladesh\u2019s foreign ministry called on India to hand her over \u201cwithout delay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is India\u2019s responsibility in keeping with the existing bilateral extradition treaty between both countries,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hasina\u2019s death sentence sets a tense stage for Bangladesh\u2019s elections planned for next February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With her Awami League now banned and its leadership scattered, the interim government led by former Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus faces the monumental task of steering the nation out of its deeply polarized political culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Awami League\u2019s absence leaves the political field open for its chief rival, Zia\u2019s Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and dozens of other smaller parties, to contest any future election, though experts warn the deep-seated divisions may not be easily resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBangladesh is far from reconciliation at this stage,\u201d said the political scientist Hasan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says the Awami League may attempt to stage a political comeback, albeit not under Hasina\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question now is whether Hasina\u2019s demise marks the end of a toxic era, or simply the beginning of a new chapter of uncertainty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She was once cast as a secular heroine, the daughter of a revolutionary leader, whose brutal assassination in the 1970s defined her political ascent.
